I was introduced to Barack Obama a little over a year ago. Neal casually mentioned to me something about an underdog Senator from Illinois that reminded him of a politican I would like. When I asked him why he thought I would like him, he just said that this senator, Barack Obama, seemed sincere and his views, speeches, and presentations seemed to be something for which I was looking. I listened and nodded, convinced that a man with such a dream and vision would probably be weeded out early in the race. Politics have a way, it seems, to murder whatever hopeful individuals it presents and then gnaws them in front of us just to ensure we understand the point. I had truly lost faith, and interest in politics.
Yet once I knew how to pronounce the name and finally how to spell it, I found that Neal was right. I couldn’t help myself from following, initially just with a spiked interest and then with a religious vigor, the public works of the senator. I poured over speeches he made, books that he wrote, and presentations he made on television. I couldn’t get enough.
To me, Obama gave me something back. He gave me back faith in American politics, which I had gradually lost over time and which was finally smoldered out by being a “black-sheep” liberal in the south. I just learned to keep my ideas to myself, hold on to the “Oh shit” handle, and pray that the current political agenda did not @#$% up our country beyond repair.
“But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.” -Barack Obama
So I sit here, watching Obama on CNN and hoping that quote is true. Hoping that he can make it beyond color, creed, previous religion or Hillary through the primaries. And then, hoping that the conservative America may finally see what he can provide for us despite the fact that he has a preacher that has said some inappropriate comments or that he said people were bitter. I hold on to the hope that this may be possible…that he may represent me with my country. I hold onto that steadfastly, and hopefully.
And by the way…what the hell is up with Hillary’s pointing during speeches? I mean seriously…who is she really pointing at? No one…she just wants to look cool. And someone should let her know otherwise! LOL! “(<Hillary Clinton> is talking like she’s Annie Oakley! Like she’s out there duck shootin every Tuesday.” -Obama )I honestly wish Hillary would jump off the bandwagon of attacking whatever the media presents about Obama. I also wish she’d do her party a favor and head on outta the way…
